Project description

The Train de la Mure is a landmark infrastructure in the French Alps which was original inaugurated in 1888. The train was electrified in 1903, thus becoming the wolrd’s first high-voltage DC electrified train.

Originally serving the anthracite mines, the train was also helped for the construction of the MOnteynard electrical dam.

From 1989, the Petit Train de la Mure has become a purely touristic infrastructure.

In 2013, the Conseil Général de l’Isère (the “CG38”) launched a call for tenders for the refurbishment of the La Mure train and its operation as part of a new 30-year public service delegation (DSP)

The CG38 received offers from three competitors, including SNC Lavalin (now EDEIS). After the suspension of exclusive negotiations between SNC Lavalin and the Conseil Général de l’Isère between 2014 and 2015, the signing of the concession was done in 2017.

The new concessionaire was responsible for
– the renovation of the locomotives and wagons
– the renovation of the line, bridges and tunnels
– the construction of a new station in La Mure
– the construction of a panoramic terrace at the arrival

The La Mure railway is part of a wider project to develop tourism in the Matheysine area. Its aim is to promote touristic activities on the plateau.

The train leaves from the station at La Mure and arrive at the Grand Balcon with its panoramic view (see picture).

The Petit Train de la Mure was reopened to public in 2021
